Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between GST and HST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 5% federal tax that applies across all of Canada. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is a single combined tax that some provinces have merged with the federal GST — it includes the 5% federal portion plus a provincial portion (8% in Ontario for the 13% total, 9% in NB/NL/PE for the 15% total, 9% in Nova Scotia for the 14% total). Five provinces use HST; the rest charge GST plus a separate provincial tax (PST, QST, or RST).

How is QST calculated in Quebec?

QST (Quebec Sales Tax) is 9.975% and is calculated on the price including GST. So on a $100 invoice: GST 5% = $5, QST 9.975% on $105 = $10.47, total = $115.47. The combined rate is 14.975% but the actual amount charged is slightly higher due to the compound calculation. This is the only province where the math works this way.

Are these the current 2026 rates?

Yes. Rates are sourced from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Revenu Québec, and provincial finance ministries. The most recent change was Nova Scotia's HST reduction from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025 — the first provincial rate change in 14 years. This page was last reviewed on July 5, 2026.

Is this calculator really free? Do you store my data?

Yes, it's free, and no, we don't store any calculation data. All the math runs in your browser — no API calls, no data sent to our servers. The optional email field at the bottom (which only appears after you calculate) is a PDF delivery request; it's the only thing that would touch our backend, and we only use it to send you the PDF and a launch notification.

I'm a freelancer — should I charge GST/HST?

You must register for GST/HST and charge it once your revenue over any rolling 12-month period exceeds $30,000 CAD (the "small supplier threshold"). Below that, registration is optional. Most provinces require you to register in the province where you supply the service. See the CRA small supplier page for the full rule.

What's a typical Q1 / Q2 / etc. filing deadline?

If you're a quarterly filer (most freelancers), the deadline is one month after the end of the quarter: April 30 for Q1 (Jan-Mar), July 31 for Q2 (Apr-Jun), October 31 for Q3 (Jul-Sep), January 31 for Q4 (Oct-Dec). Annual filers have until March 31 of the following year. The CRA charges penalties and interest on late filings.
